The Science Behind Traditional Finnish Sauna Use
The modern resurgence of sauna culture in the United States is rooted in compelling long-term research – particularly from Finland, where sauna usage is a centuries-old daily practice. University of Eastern Finland researchers have conducted landmark longitudinal studies following over 2,000 middle-aged men for more than 20 years. Findings include:

Authentic Finnish Sauna Terminology
- Löyly – The steam created when water is poured over heated sauna stones. Essential for humidity control and perceived heat intensity.
- Kiulu – Traditional wooden bucket used for water ladling.
- Kauha – The ladle used to pour water over sauna rocks.
- Saunamökki – A standalone sauna cottage; popular for lakefront properties in Lake Geneva and Southern Wisconsin.
- Thermal Envelope – The insulated shell that ensures efficient heat retention and energy performance.
- Vapor Barrier – Moisture control layer installed behind cedar cladding to prevent condensation damage.
- Bench Geometry – The engineered height and depth of upper and lower benches to optimize heat exposure.
- Mechanical Ventilation – Air intake and exhaust design ensuring oxygen replenishment and temperature stratification control.
- Cedar Cladding – Naturally rot-resistant, aromatic wood used for sauna interiors.
